Software Defined Storage (SDS) has not taken the data center by storm like many experts predicted. Sales of turnkey hardware and software solutions still dominate the storage purchases for most data centers. The problem is that most SDS solutions have…
Hyperconvergence has a real problem. It can’t scale. While hyperconverged architectures may be a good match for medium sized business, as the environment scales it’s “all for one, one for all” simplicity becomes problematic. As is usually the case, storage…
Users demand a seamless digital experience. When something goes wrong they expect their data and applications to quickly return, preferably without them ever knowing something went wrong in the first place. For IT this seamless expectation means data has to…
An Independent Process for Assessing & Refreshing Storage Every data center eventually needs to increase capacity, resiliency, performance or the cost efficiency of its storage architecture. It needs to refresh storage infrastructure. The problem is that most organizations don’t have…
Flash often makes the hardware selection less important, but makes the software selection very important. The right software can not only ensure optimal flash performance, but also extend flash implementation beyond the typical high-transaction database use cases and into modern…
Meeting strict RPOs and RTOs requires that data protection solutions provide IT administrators better monitoring and analytics, in addition to more frequent copies. Backup, snapshot and replication are reactive solutions, that IT rightly counts on to make sure they can…
In a recent article, my colleague George Crump discussed the need to simplify data protection (DP) and disaster recovery (DR) operations, with primary storage that is DR ready. DR ready primary storage would aid in DP and DR processes without…
A copy data management solution should save organization’s money in two areas. First, and most obvious, physical capacity consumption by creating virtual copies instead of actual copies, but any storage system with snapshot capabilities can at some level claim that…
I’m amazed at how often the question of backing up virtual machines running within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure comes up. The short answer is, “absolutely!” Thinking that your VMs in AWS do not need backups is a surefire…
There are a lot of options available to IT professionals looking to improve their ability to recover from a disaster. One is copy data management, very popular in the press. The other is DR Ready Primary Storage, something that Storage…
