Hyperconverged Architectures attempt to simplify data center operations by converging compute, storage and networking to a single tier. For many businesses hyperconvergence is certainly a step in the right direction. But there is one service that most hyperconverged architectures leave…
Virtual machines (VMs) need file services as much as physical servers need them. Once file services expanded beyond user home directories, administrators started using them for the storage needs of many different types of applications. Besides sharing data between multiple…
There is no doubt that all-flash arrays are fast. In fact, for many data centers the performance of an entry level all-flash array provides more IOPS performance than they will ever need. But the reality is most data centers are…
Backup and DR can be separate systems, but do not have to be. Modern advances in backup and DR technology make it possible to have a single integrated system to satisfy the needs of both, and I can think of…
Enterprises should standardize on object storage for almost all (95 percent of their unstructured data and limit their network attached storage systems (NAS) storage to only the most active data that requires high performance. The payoff to your organization will…
Object storage should be a compelling alternative to traditional enterprise network attached storage systems. However its adoption is slow. Most enterprises just continue to expand NAS infrastructures despite the fact object storage is a better fit for unstructured data storage…
Software defined storage (SDS) promises to abstract storage services from storage hardware, freeing organizations from the “lock” of having to use specific storage hardware. But the price for this “freedom” is imprisonment to a single storage software vendor. While certainly…
Ransomware attacks against corporations is such a common problem that it has even made its way into television plots. Both seasons of the popular Mr. Robot television series on USA network focus on a series of ransomware attacks against a…
High Performance Computing (HPC) creates interesting challenges for the storage infrastructure. First, storage systems supporting HPC have to meet increasingly higher performance demands. High performance HPC storage enables more simulations and deeper analytics across a wider set of data. Leveraging…
To some, object storage systems have been something off in the distance. Other people may use it, but they’re not sure it really helps them. Add the perceived requirement of changing user behavior and you have a stalemate. But what…
