Organizations are asking the present day NetApp Filer to do many things: host home directories, store machine generated data, host virtual machine images and even databases. What was once a single purpose appliance focused on file server replacement is now…
This past January, Storage Switzerland provided its analysis of SUSE Enterprise Storage 2, a hardened version of Ceph designed to address enterprise concerns over the open software defined storage solution. That release saw SUSE add capabilities like heterogeneous OS access…
The public cloud has backed IT into a number of uncomfortable places; specifically, there are a number of environments where company data is being created in places where it is difficult to protect. This is especially true for smaller companies…
Storing primary data in the cloud flies in the face of logic. Data is typically stored where the user would create it and there is one reason for that: physics. There was a time, of course, when storage and compute…
DRaaS is the future of disaster recovery, but leveraging cloud backup may be an expensive way to implement it. Cloud replication, because it is operating on the working set, keeps cloud storage costs contained. The cloud replication software also enables organizations with an IT ready secondary site to leverage that site and create their own DRaaS. In either case, the organization is in control of when and how recovery happens. DRaaS built on replication also enables organizations to use the replication software to enable other cloud initiatives like bursting and test/dev. In this article Storage Switzerland explores the various methods to go about creating and implementing a DRaaS solution.
