Predictable Virtual Server Performance for Less

For many storage planners it is a daunting task to size their virtual storage infrastructure “just right”, without needless overspending. Indeed, this is becoming increasingly difficult to attain given the high degree of I/O workload variability that multiple virtual machines (VMs) throw at server infrastructure. Virtual Instruments aims to help IT planners gain better insights into their environment so that they can avoid the high cost of over provisioned storage architecture.

As revealed by a recent survey commissioned by Virtual Instruments, most IT managers are finding the transition from physical to virtual infrastructure highly complex. In addition, the move towards private cloud infrastructure is adding yet another layer of complexity into the IT management landscape. Because there are a lack of tools to enable storage planners to accurately size their virtual storage infrastructure, many resort to over provisioning storage resources to ensure quality of service (QoS) on their critical virtualized business applications. This can actually threaten the ROI of a virtualization project before it even gets started.

Virtual Instruments has an infrastructure performance management (IPM) platform which provides real-time end-to-end performance monitoring of VMware virtual infrastructure – from VMs to the switching infrastructure and down to the storage resources. Their device, called a probe, does performance monitoring off the wire at full line rate. This level of visibility allows organizations to identify, troubleshoot and rapidly resolve bottlenecks and other performance related issues as they occur in real-time.

Importantly the Virtual Instruments offering, called “Virtual Wisdom”, also enables storage planners to more accurately size storage purchases by utilizing metrics gathered in the customer’s environment. Virtual Instruments claims this capability alone has saved many of their customer’s money; not to mention better predictability and improved QoS for critical business applications.

To make their Virtual Wisdom IPM platform more cost effective on a per port basis, they recently released a 2U, 48-port probe. Virtual Instruments believes this will allow enterprise customers to proactively monitor performance for a very broad range of applications.

Virtual Instruments will be exhibiting at the SNW Europe show on October 29th and 30th. You can see them at Booth #98.
