The need for these solutions is critical because the growth of unstructured data is out of control and the primary storage destination for that data, NetApp NAS systems, are experiencing it own sprawl. The reality is that 80% of the data that is on these premium priced NetApp storage systems doesn’t deserve to be there because it has not been accessed in months, if not years. The problem has been that there is a gap between the primary NetApp storage and a secondary, less expensive storage system or archive. As a result, storage administrators have found it easier to add capacity to the NetApp than actually managing and archiving the data that those systems store.

To be honest, many archiving and HSM products have targeted the NetApp installed base and failed for two key reasons. The first problem was that building a NetApp archive required the assembly of a lot of products from a lot of different suppliers. Not only did this complicate matters, it also drove up costs to the point that the archive was not that much less expensive than the NetApp disk it was proposed to replace.
The second problem was that these solutions were fragile. They were typically “hacks” into the NetApp operating system and as a result were susceptible to failure any time, NetApp updated Data OnTap (its operating system). They also did not protect the meta-data behind the archive very well. This data held the key to transparent access of archived data, if lost or corrupted you simply couldn’t get to your data any more. We cover these problems and how to overcome them in the above video.
