Private Cloud Storage cost containment

Reducing the cost of storage may seem like a fool’s errand in a world where enterprise production data is predicted to grow by 800% over the next five years. It’s the proverbial “finger in the dyke”. But if there was a single area in the data center that represents an opportunity for organizations to drive down costs through increased efficiencies, storage would have to be towards the top of the list.

In our recent report, “Reducing Storage TCO Through Private Cloud Storage”, we discuss how unstructured data is the main culprit in this ongoing data deluge that is starting to swamp data center environments. Essentially any data asset that doesn’t reside in a database application, can be classified as unstructured data. Some examples include end user files, PDF’s, rich multimedia, machine sensor data, etc. This report is available exclusively when you register for our on-demand webinar, “The Seven Keys To Lowering Storage TCO Using Object Storage”. And while it might be tempting for IT planners to selectively prune this information in order to reduce their storage consumption, this is becoming less of an option due to compliance requirements, new data analytic systems and the need for businesses to monetize their data assets to create new revenue streams.

Private cloud storage enables businesses to build highly scalable storage environments that in many cases, can cost less than public cloud storage being offered by Amazon and Google. But interestingly, some of these offerings enable businesses to build-out their own multi-site private cloud storage environments while still retaining the ability to attach to public cloud storage resources. This can give IT organizations the best of both worlds – private cloud storage built on low cost commodity storage infrastructure that has the ability to leverage the public cloud for data archiving or as a low cost DR site.

Another benefit of private cloud storage is that it allows an organization to start small (TBs) and scale into large multi-PB environments. And typically, a single administrator can manage PB’s of data. This is critically important towards implementing a solution that will have real staying power in the data center.
