Software-Defined Storage – Over-Hyped or Overdue?

The interest in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) is at an all-time high and data center operators want to know if now is the time to move towards this type of a storage infrastructure. In our latest workshop series “Software Defined Storage – Over-Hyped or OverDue?”, we define exactly what SDS is, what makes it different from other storage strategies, what the problems with SDS are and finally, whether it’s right for your data center.

The top question we get asked about SDS is around the area of market legitimacy. SDS shares a lot of its genealogy with storage virtualization and savvy IT professionals are wary that vendors are merely putting lipstick on the same pig. SDS, for Storage Switzerland, is the abstraction of data services (snapshots, replication, thin provisioning, etc…) from the physical storage hardware. Where that software lands, on another dedicated storage system, an off-the-shelf server, a virtual machine in a virtualized infrastructure, or embedded into the operating system / hypervisor, is an important differentiator of the SDS solution. But all these implementation methods still fall under the same SDS umbrella.

In the seminar we will look at each of these forms and talk about the pros and especially the cons of each. The industry does not like to talk about the potential downsides of SDS, but we will. SDS solutions can suffer from many challenges, including not supporting current hardware, not offering a robust replacement set of data services and not being as economical as was originally promised. These are key factors to consider when deciding if SDS is right for you. And that is what you will leave this workshop with, a yes/no on SDS. You’ll also develop a process to choose the right SDS solution for your organization as well as an action plan on how to implement it in your data center.

The event premiers in Dallas at 9am on March 25th at The Capital Grille, 500 Crescent Ct, Dallas, TX 75201 from 11:30-1:30 pm as part of Clear Technologies’ Steak and Storage series. If you’re in the greater Dallas area and want to attend please sign up below. We are also planning on having the event in Houston, Denver, Phoenix and San Jose in the coming months. So if you are in one of those areas, please sign up as well and we will notify you when we have the date and time set.
