In this ChalkTalk Video Storage Switzerland Lead Analyst George Crump and FalconStor VP of Corporate Marketing Tim Sheets explain what Software Defined Storage (SDS) is, what to look for in a SDS solution and how to determine if SDS makes sense for the organization.
As discussed in the video, SDS is the abstraction of storage services from the storage system. It enables the storage infrastructure to become more responsive to the needs of the business while at the same time driving down overall storage costs. It applies features like automated tiering, snapshots, thin provisioning, replication, deduplication, compression etc across all the storage systems in the environment, regardless of manufacturer.
SDS also enables an IT professional to select the best of bread all-flash array and use it in concert with their existing hard disk based storage systems. The right SDS software can seamlessly migrate between the new and old platforms. In fact, the old storage platform can find new life as part of the data protection process.
Finally, as we point out in the video, not all SDS solutions are created equal. Some have quite a few problems you need to address, as we discuss in our article “The Three Problems with Software Defined Storage”. It is critical to select the right SDS solution that supports your current storage investment while paving a path to the future.
