The first Web-scale problem – too many parts

While originally intended for online application and storage providers, web-scale architectures have plenty of capabilities that catch the attention of enterprise IT. A web-scale architecture’s ability to scale both performance and capacity in a cost effective manner is at the top of every enterprise’s wish list. But web-scale architectures also have a few big problems that can get enterprises as disinterested as quickly as they got interested.

In our upcoming webinar, “Web-scale vs. Enterprise IT“, experts from Storage Switzerland and Nutanix will discuss how to best address these problems so enterprise IT can finally realize all the benefits of web-scale architectures.

Problem #1 – Build it Yourself

It is funny sometimes how a key advantage to a solution for some markets can be its biggest problem for others. The build it yourself nature of web-scale architectures is an excellent case in point. These architectures have the ability to generally use anyone’s server hardware, storage hardware and network interconnect. This should allow the data center that is going web-scale to save a lot of money. The problem is that enterprise IT simply does not have the time and in some cases the expertise to effectively test every potential solution in each product category.

In most enterprises, IT is not the product, it is there to support the delivery of that product. This means that while cutting IT cost is important in most enterprises, it is not as important as making sure that products ship on time and revenue is collected. This reality also means that IT staffing is not what it should or could be. These teams are stretched very thin and even the thought of doing a detailed bake-off of the different web-scale solutions along with their required server, storage and network hardware simply can’t happen.

This leads many enterprises to the opposite end of the spectrum; a hardware based turnkey solution from one of the big three vendors. This certainly eliminates some of the complexity and parts assembly, but at what cost? Now the enterprise is right back where they left off, expensive name brand hardware that may or may not be scalable at all.
