The second Web-scale problem – can’t run Microsoft Applications

In our last column, we discussed one of the challenges that web-scale architectures face when the enterprise tries to adopt them: “The first Web-scale problem – too many parts”. As we discussed in our on demand webinar, “Web-scale vs. Enterprise IT“, there is another challenge facing the highly scalable, converged architectures; they can’t run the Microsoft applications that are the heartbeat of so many businesses today. If these applications can’t be made to run in the web-scale environment, then web-scale is essentially useless to enterprise IT.

The good news is the hardware has the ability run these applications. Business applications like those from Microsoft and Oracle all run on Intel based hardware. The challenge is the environment in which they run is typically Windows running on top of either Hyper-V or VMware. To be effective, the web-scale environment has to be able to run these applications natively.

There is also the issue of time and training. Enterprise IT does not have the time to learn another hypervisor and/or another operating system. Let’s face it, one of the reasons that Hyper-V can even be considered a competitor to VMware is that it has the look and feel of Windows, which most enterprises are very familiar with. The same holds true for a web-scale architecture. To be successful in the enterprise, it needs to run the applications that enterprises are used to and it needs to run on an environment that enterprise IT professionals are already comfortable in.

For Enterprise Web-scale to work properly, it needs to bring the web-scale apparatus into the same environments and applications that enterprise IT is using today.
