Watch this ChalkTalk Video with Storage Switzerland’s Lead Analyst George Crump to learn the four steps to getting all-flash performance from a hybrid array.
Hybrid arrays have a clear price advantage over all-flash storage systems because they leverage hard disk drives to drive down the cost per GB. The concept makes sense since not all data needs flash performance all the time. Since most of the data can be delivered from the flash tier, hybrid systems can make the price advantage even more pronounced by using high capacity hard disks instead of low capacity performance hard disks. Hybrid arrays do introduce a level of performance unpredictability that make IT planners nervous. If data does need to be read from the hard disk tier, there will be an obvious performance drop, made even more pronounced if the system uses high capacity hard disks. But with proper design, hybrid systems can deliver predictable all-flash like performance by dramatically reducing and in some cases eliminating the chances of a cache miss. In the above video we walk you through the 4 keys to that proper design:
- Properly size the flash storage tier
- Optimize that flash storage tier
- Pin mission critical applications to the flash tier
- Fix application code so that it is more cache friendly
