One of the key data points coming out of EMC World 2014 last week was that the adoption of the “cloud”, especially from a primary storage perspective, will likely be hybrid in nature. Meaning that part of an organization’s data will remain on premise and part will be in the public cloud. But creating a hybrid cloud solution can be more difficult than creating either an entirely private storage cloud or entirely public storage cloud. How can the overworked IT team possibly assemble a hybrid cloud solution that meets the capacity, performance and security concerns of the organization?
The Three Horsemen – Capacity, Performance and Security
The three primary concerns of any cloud storage solution is its ability to scale at an affordable price, its performance capabilities and data security. Cloud providers like Amazon and Google provide the basic capabilities needed to meet these concerns, but it often requires extensive custom programming to take advantage of them.
The problem is that many enterprise environments often don’t have the time, the expertise nor the access to the code itself to make the changes required so that the demands of the three horsemen can be met.
Are Gateways The Answer?
Cloud gateways are offered up as the bridge to get data centers to the cloud, but most of these gateways are not targeted at the enterprise. They don’t offer the performance and reliability that are required by enterprise data center environments. As a result, gateways are often used to move secondary data sets to the cloud, while primary data sets are left untouched.
CloudNAS To The Rescue
The enterprise needs a storage device that is focused on the enterprise needs, essentially network attached storage (NAS) with cloud integration, i.e. a CloudNAS. This type of solution would allow the enterprise to actually improve on-premise storage performance, leverage on-premise NAS as a capacity tier AND provide the customer the ability to automate cloud data movement but control what data is moved to public cloud storage and when that data is moved.
Summary
The enterprise needs the hybrid cloud, but it needs an easy way to incorporate enterprise class attributes like scalability, high performance and air tight security.
