Virtualized Hybrid Disk Backup for Veeam

Disk based backup has become a staple in many data center environments. But now thanks to advanced recovery capabilities from virtualized backup applications like Veeam, Unitrend’s PHD Virtual and Dell’s vRanger, more is being asked of disk backup systems. For example, features like recovery in place allow virtual machines (VMs) to boot directly from a backup image on disk. This can potentially enhance recovery time objectives (RTOs), however, most backup appliances rely on high density, low RPM disk drives to keep costs in check. As a result, many end-users have to forego using this potentially useful feature due to the poor performance that slow disk drives would render to critical business applications.

Hybrid Powered Recoveries

One potential solution is a hybrid disk backup appliance architecture. Hybrid storage solutions, which include a mix of SSD and conventional hard disk drives, are increasing in popularity in primary storage environments. SSD is typically reserved for the most active data sets while less active data is stored on economical hard disk drive storage. This same approach could potentially serve the new demands that are emerging in disk backup environments that are protecting data for virtualized server infrastructure. But the key is to deploy affordable disk backup technology that incorporates a hybrid design of SSD and HDD.

Performance and Capacity

In fact, only a relatively small portion of SSD would be required to host the backup data for the most mission critical business application information. For instance, a SQL database could be backed up directly to SSD on the backup appliance and then the data would be de-staged to more cost-effective, high density disk drives once this information became inactive.

Likewise, if this same SQL database suddenly needed to be restored, the disk backup system would promote this data from HDD to SSD to facilitate “recovery in place” capabilities. The rest of the backup appliance could then provide dozens of TB’s of storage capacity to host potentially multiple weeks worth of backup data.
