Storage Management – It’s Back on the Shopping List

Storage management tools have sometimes been viewed as a “nice to have” tool by many IT infrastructure planners, however, given all the complexities with efficiently managing resources in today’s highly virtualized server environments, it is quickly turning into a must have. Aptare is one of the few vendor independent storage management application providers left in the industry. With their 20 year track record and impressive client roster of over 1,000 customers, Aptare remains focused on helping organizations drive down storage costs while mitigating risk.

Aptare’s extensive storage management software suite provides end-to-end global visibility of hosts and storage through all the virtualization layers. This is inclusive of physical and virtual servers, switch fabric interfaces, primary storage and backup resources. In addition to providing real-time monitoring of the overall health of the environment, Aptare’s offerings enable storage managers to identify orphaned storage resources, whether physical or virtual, and reclaim them to improve efficiencies.

Another important Aptare business use case is enabling chargeback capabilities for multi-tenant, virtualized infrastructure. Resource consumption can be granularly tracked across primary and backup resources and automatically billed back to an internal line of business end user or to a cloud service provider (CSP) customer.

With storage growth rates soaring, the task of capacity planning is very far from an exact science. As a result, many organizations will over-provision storage capacity to avoid underestimating the capacity needs of their various business systems. By maintaining historical storage consumption patterns down to the individual host, Aptare enables storage planners to more accurately forecast future storage needs so they may budget accordingly and save money. Moreover, by reporting on those applications which are grossly over-provisioned, Aptare helps to maintain storage efficiencies on an ongoing basis.

Another way that Aptare helps maintain storage efficiencies is through their file analytic capabilities. Unstructured data, according to various industry sources, now accounts for up to 90% of all new data growth. Aptare can extract the metadata from unstructured data to compile information about file ownership, last access time, file size, etc. to help businesses identify data this is suitable for archiving or for outright purging (personal photos, videos, iTunes, etc.).

Aptare’s recently announced version 9 of their Storage Console product. Some of the new features include a new and easier to navigate GUI, support for tablets and the creation of a cloud based report and analytics template database. This last feature could be interesting for Aptare customers that wish to use a version of a report developed by another Aptare client within the same industry. For example, a CSP chargeback report which granularly drills down into all permutations of cloud billable resources and services.

Aptare will be demonstrating the new version 9 Storage Console Product at the SNW Europe conference. You can find them at booth #92.
