Copy Data in the Cloud

While industry pundits and analysts yammer on about the unrelenting growth of data, the real issue for enterprise data centers and Cloud Service Providers (CSPs), is keeping a lid on the extensive number of redundant copies of information that propagate throughout their environment. Between snapshots, offsite backups, business intelligence, test/dev, etc., many organizations have up to 20 extra copies of their primary business data. That drives enormous costs, both capital and operational, into the data center.

Actifio has been helping to solve this “copy data management” explosion through their Copy Data Storage platform. As we covered in a prior briefing report, Actifio’s storage appliance maintains a single copy of production data, efficiently protects it and non-disruptively shares it up to a broad range of business applications to significantly reduce data redundancy and all its attendant costs.

Actifio claims their recently released 6.0 software provides enhanced business agility by dramatically speeding up application development workflow cycles. Typically it can take weeks to provision production copies of data to support application development efforts. This can put businesses at a competitive disadvantage both from a time-to-market standpoint as well as from an internal cost perspective.

Version 6.0 now features the capability to serve up backup copies of production data (called “live clones”) to test and development systems. Moreover, refreshed copies of production copy data can be served up on a set interval for any business use case; whether test/dev, business intelligence or any other application which can benefit from near real-time access to business data. This greatly simplifies, automates and streamlines the otherwise tedious and laborious tasks of coordinating data sharing amongst multiple business systems.

Data resiliency has always been a core part of Actifio’s offering. With direct, out of band application integration with VMware, Oracle and any Linux or Windows based application, Actifio’s Copy Data Storage system can continuously protect data without the need for a separate backup window. Version 6.0 now adds direct support for SAP, SQL Server, Exchange Cluster, HP-UX, Solaris and IBM-i environments.

Actifio will be exhibiting at the upcoming SNW-Europe conference (Booth #106) and also plans to have a CSP panel discussion that will include their existing CSP client, Grass-Merkur.
