During a recent Storage Swiss webinar, “Designing Cloud Backup To Reduce DR Downtime”, we asked the audience, “If Your Computer Room Was Flooded, How Long Would You Be Down?” Nearly half the respondents stated that they didn’t know how long they would be down for. This is a clear indication that despite investments in backup and recovery infrastructure, most organizations are not entirely confident that they would be able to recover critical systems in a timely manner.
High availability solutions like server clustering and replication to a “hot data center” site can provide very high levels of availability while ensuring minimal data loss. But these technologies can be expensive and complex to implement and manage. In many instances, these types of offerings are only affordable to big businesses with big IT budgets. So how can a small to medium sized business (SMB) attain the same types of recovery point and recovery time objectives (RPO/RTO) that are achievable by large enterprise environments?
The good news is there are some cloud integrated backup and recovery offerings that deliver an “all-in-one” solution for reliably protecting data while also providing very high levels of availability for critical physical and virtualized hosts. These technologies have the built-in intelligence to immediately detect a local hardware failure and can pro-actively recover a failed system locally or in the cloud and do so at near production level performance service levels. Perhaps most interesting to SMBs, this type of turn-key data protection and application recoverability can be acquired for about the same price as a standard backup appliance solution.
During Superstorm Sandy, multiple businesses were impacted either by a loss of power and/or a flooded data center. Unfortunately, many organizations were down for so long, they ultimately went out of business. On the other hand, those businesses that leveraged a cloud integrated backup and recovery solution were able to recover their failed applications in a matter of minutes or hours. And that made all the difference.
