White Paper: How to Reduce Secondary Storage Infrastructure Size and Cost

Secondary storage does more than just store backups. It also serves as storage for archive data, IoT data and support copy data use cases like test development and reporting. As a result, the infrastructure requirements for secondary data have grown significantly in the last few years. Secondary storage, both from a physical space and from an operational overhead perspective, threatens to take large chunks out of the IT budget.

To combat the requirements of secondary storage organizations are looking to the cloud to help them meet the challenges it creates. The problem is that the mega-cloud providers essentially provide infrastructure only, not a complete turnkey secondary storage management solution. Most organization’s IT staff is stretched thin, and they lack the skills required to take full advantage of infrastructure as a service offerings.

At the other end of the spectrum are purpose-built cloud providers who provide a turnkey solution but only for a single product. They don’t meet the full secondary storage need, to support multiple applications from different vendors and multiple use cases like backup, archive and copy data management.

An alternative is a full-service cloud provider. These providers specialize in a particular segment, like secondary storage, but support a variety of backup, archive and copy data applications and use cases. In our latest white paper, “Developing a Secondary Storage Strategy”, Storage Switzerland lays out a plan to create a scalable, long-lasting secondary storage strategy and includes how to integrate the cloud into that strategy. The paper is attached to the on demand webinar. Click below and you can download it right away.
