Acquisitions are a common occurrence in the IT market. Most are predictable, but every so often one takes us off-guard. Datto’s acquisition of Backupify falls into that category. But even more rare is this acquisition actually makes sense. Datto is a leading provider of cloud based backup and disaster recovery as a service and Backupify is a leader in the cloud-to-cloud market. Having both available from the same company and via the same channel is an almost perfect combination.
Who is Datto?
Another unusual aspect of this acquisition is that Datto, despite being a leader in their market, is not a household name. Datto sells its solution exclusively through partners so most IT professionals have not dealt with the company directly. You can get all the details on Datto in our webinar, “Designing Cloud Backup to reduce DR downtime”. Essentially the company develops software and hardware that allows its partners to deliver a very complete and turnkey data protection solution that leverages the cloud for long-term data storage, business continuance and disaster recovery.
Who is Backupify?
Ironically Backupify may be the better household name. They are a leading provider of cloud- to-cloud backup technology that provides protection for Google Apps, Salesforce.com, Box and Smartsheet. They also protect corporate Twitter accounts and Facebook Business pages. However, we think that organizations and IT within those organizations still need convincing that these various cloud-based applications should be backed up. There is no question that this need is legitimate, the reasons why just need to be better articulated.
This is the second cloud-to-cloud backup acquisition this quarter; the other was EMC’s acquisition of Spanning, and for good reason. More and more corporate data resides in the cloud for one reason or the other, but we will probably never get to the point that ALL corporate data is in the cloud. That reality makes this acquisition so logical. Datto and their partners, now under a single umbrella, can protect both on-premise and cloud based data sets, which is a very unique capability.
