Previewing EMC World 2015

EMC World has evolved into one of the largest storage events in the industry, taking second place only to VMworld. While the event clearly has an EMC bend to it (it is after all EMC World) there are plenty of storage ecosystem vendors at the event. StorageSwiss will be there again providing as much real-time coverage and write ups as possible, so make sure you stay tuned next week for our analysis of the various EMC announcements.

All-Flash In The Wild

This year we expect to get some quality time with EMC customers, more so than usual. We are going to focus in on all-flash XtremIO customers. All-flash arrays are moving rapidly into production so we think it is important that you learn how real data centers are using all-flash to solve specific performance problems and creating new business opportunities. Look for several write ups on XtremIO success stories.

Data Protection

We also have received some indication that we will see a lot of new capabilities in the data protection part of EMC’s offering. We are looking for expanding hardware coverage for RecoverPoint, EMC’s disaster recovery and data replication solution. We also expect to see ProtectPoint, EMC’s solution that allows direct backups from primary storage to protected storage, to expand coverage to additional applications as well as be more tightly integrated into EMC’s other data protection solutions.

Emerging Technologies

From the emerging technologies group we expect to see more of a maturation than a specific new announcement, but this group can always hold a surprise or two. EMC’s Elastic Cloud Storage is being well received by customers, creating a way for traditional data centers to privatize the cloud without having to build it from scratch. ViPR’s big splash was a couple years ago, and again I think we will see a more mature product that is adapting to the needs of the customer base. Finally, I think we will get some clue as to what EMC is doing with its DSSD. This solution is likely to be very focused on performance.

VNX and VNXe

VNX and VNXe may not be as “cool” as the rest of the EMC product line, but it is the workhorse. Expect a few minor updates here, and maybe something virtual.

Stay tuned to Storage Switzerland for briefing notes and podcasts with all the EMC news from EMC World.

Twelve years ago George Crump founded Storage Switzerland with one simple goal; to educate IT professionals about all aspects of data center storage. He is the primary contributor to Storage Switzerland and is a heavily sought after public speaker. With over 25 years of experience designing storage solutions for data centers across the US, he has seen the birth of such technologies as RAID, NAS and SAN, Virtualization, Cloud and Enterprise Flash. Prior to founding Storage Switzerland he was CTO at one of the nation's largest storage integrators where he was in charge of technology testing, integration and product selection.
