The ideal first step for enterprise adoption of object storage is the replacement of NAS and file servers. Object storage is suitable for unstructured data storage; it supports almost limitless capacity and file counts, it can better protect and maintain data integrity and, it is far more cost-effective. While it seems like a perfect fit, actual implementations have struggled.
The challenge is object storage doesn’t natively support SMB or NFS protocols, the mainstay of NAS systems. Most object storage vendors try to cobble together a gateway approach that siloed data within the object store, creating a performance bottleneck and adding additional cost to the solutions.
Join Storage Switzerland and Cloudian in this on demand webinar as we discuss the advantages of object storage over NAS, the problems with converting from NAS to object storage and how to overcome those problems.
