Can Joe’s Plumbing benefit from Google and Facebook Storage?

Do businesses really need Facebook or Google like web-scale storage capabilities? After all, these organizations support Exabytes of information on a global scale. Many businesses today are merely looking for ways to lower their total cost of storage ownership (TCO), not morph into the next industry mega cloud provider.

As we discussed in our recent webinar, “The Seven Keys To Lowering Storage TCO Using Object Storage”, how Facebook and Google implemented their storage environments is instructive to any sized business.

Out of necessity, these Internet titans turned away from legacy, scale-up storage architectures and instead deployed highly efficient cloud storage systems that in effect, never become obsolete.

Data centers of any size can follow the Google and Facebook model by deploying private cloud storage solutions that can start as small as a dozen TBs but have the ability to grow into multiple PBs. And best of all, these systems can be implemented on commodity storage infrastructure. This means a much lower total cost of ownership than equivalent proprietary storage offerings that have to be continually upgraded every 3-5 years.

In addition to their scale-out capabilities, some private cloud storage solutions also provide excellent investment protection by supporting the intermixing of multi-generational storage nodes. This means that a Gen1 node can live alongside a Gen4 node without causing any management conflicts or performance issues. It also means that businesses should never have to undergo risky and time consuming data migrations. Instead, they can perform non-disruptive upgrades by gracefully decommissioning storage nodes when there are cheaper, higher performing commodity components available on the market.

In essence, businesses of all sizes, even “Joe’s Plumbing”, can leverage private cloud storage to continuously drive down their storage TCO and achieve the same economies of scale that are enabling Facebook, Google and Amazon to power the public cloud.
