Data Center Modernization Still Needs Shared Storage

Organizations are increasingly embracing technologies like OpenStack and Docker so IT can become more agile, as well as be able to adapt to user or customer demands rapidly and cost effectively. IT’s new found agility, though, requires equal flexibility from the storage infrastructure. The problem is most storage infrastructures are in ridged conflict with the agility the application layer is creating. Storage infrastructures need to evolve, becoming flexible and scalable, while continuing to deliver high performance and cost effectiveness, but those infrastructures do need to be shared.

Each of the next generation of apps were originally designed for locally attached storage. The goal was to use low cost flash SSDs that had direct access to the CPU. The problem is local storage is inherently limited, both in terms of reliability and scale. With the growth of these infrastructures, IT professionals need something more to provide similar performance, better resource utilization and better protection from failure.

Success in modern applications now requires shared storage. The components for success all exist; software defined storage, scale-out architectures, all-flash nodes, high performance networks as well as a flexible application layer driven by OpenStack and Docker. The challenge is that IT has to go out and get each of these tools on their own. What they need is a more turnkey approach of a fully tested system without introducing vendor lock-in. Essentially a software based, all-flash storage infrastructure designed specifically for OpenStack, Docker.

A scale-out storage system built on all-flash should meet all of the organization’s agile IT needs. If that solution is built with a software defined foundation but initially delivered as a turnkey system, IT can have the best of both worlds; cost effective, high performance without vendor lock-in.
