Most enterprises don’t need convincing to back up their Oracle, MS-SQL, and VMware environments but for some reason, vendors struggle convincing most IT professionals that laptops, Office 365 and Salesforce.com also need backing up. The common misconception is that since “everything is in the cloud”, these components of the enterprise don’t need the same data protection attention that critical applications do.
There is some justification for the belief that the cloud provides a layer of protection, but IT professionals need to decide if that layer of protection is enough to meet the enterprise’s obligations to protect and retain data. Cloud Service providers and data protection vendors don’t help matters by taking extreme positions which only makes it more difficult to find the exact answer.
