Organizations are already multi-cloud. They almost always have an on-premises cloud that leverages virtualization like VMware or Nutanix AHV. They also typically have some cloud-native applications or have the desire to migrate some applications to the cloud. Data protection continues to play an essential role within the data center, even as it becomes more distributed. It is in trying to consolidate the data protection of on-premises private clouds and public clouds though, that typically means using an application not purpose-built for either environment. As a result, data protection complexity increases.
Organizations need data protection solutions custom-designed for each cloud environment so that they not only look and feel like an application native to the respective environment but that also take full advantage of that environment’s capabilities. At the same time, the organization does not want to end up managing multiple cloud data protection silos. Centralizing the control aspect enables organizations to keep the correct data on the proper storage even when a backup exceeds the capacity of the original system.
