Integrating Data Value into Primary Storage

Briefing Note: DataGravity Discovery Series V2

Data is an asset and for many organizations it is more valuable than the hardware on which it resides. Despite its value, few storage systems do anything to help IT professionals understand what is actually in that asset. For the most part the value of data goes largely untapped. DataGravity is poised to change the status quo and let organizations realize the full potential of the data asset.

Good Ideas That Don’t Execute Well

IT is full of good ideas that have not executed well; Managed Service Providers, Information Lifecycle Management, and Data Classification are three examples. But as technology has advanced these ideas are becoming reality thanks to the general improvement in technology and integration of those technologies into the storage stack. Data Classification, understanding what is inside the data and finding it quickly, is the missing piece of the puzzle. DataGravity has integrated data classification, or what they call data insight, directly into their primary storage system. Thanks to this integration, data insight is real-time on the primary storage device instead of data classification’s need for a separate, expensive and time-consuming process.

Discovery Series V2

New in this release DataGravity has extended its ability to define, detect and defend an organization’s data. Administrators and users can now add their custom tags to files to help with organizational specific classification. They’ve also added intelligence profiles that can automatically identify sensitive data. In fact, DataGravity claims that 100% of their customers have found sensitive data.

In terms of security, DataGravity Discovery Series V2 also can defend data at the point of storage. In addition to providing full audit trails of user activity on files, the system can alert administrators before something malicious occurs. Cryptolock, for example, is a problem for many organizations. With the DataGravity storage system in place, the manager is alerted when a process is modifying a high number of files all at once. The administrator can stop that process and leverage a snapshot to roll back to unencrypted versions of the file. Modern security has to continue to try to prevent unauthorized access but also mitigate damage when unauthorized access does occur.

This IS a Primary Storage Solution

It is important to keep in mind that DataGravity is a turnkey primary storage solution designed to be the workhorse of the data center. The system ranges in capacities from 18TB to 96TB and leverages a combination of flash and hard disk drives to deliver mainstream performance. It also provides the robust feature set that storage managers have come to expect from their storage systems.

StorageSwiss Take

Storage systems today deliver high capacity and high performance, but not many provide insight into the data that they store. As StorageSwiss detailed in a briefing note earlier this year, DataGravity provides a storage system that meets production performance and capacity demands while also allowing organizations to realize value from the investment. Now with  Series V2 they are taking that a step further, increasing an organization’s ability to understand and secure its storage.

Storage Switzerland’s MeetTheCEO podcast series recently featured Paula Long, CEO of DataGravity and founder of EqualLogic. Listen to our extensive interview with her to gain valuable insights not only on DataGravity but also business in general.

Twelve years ago George Crump founded Storage Switzerland with one simple goal; to educate IT professionals about all aspects of data center storage. He is the primary contributor to Storage Switzerland and is a heavily sought after public speaker. With over 25 years of experience designing storage solutions for data centers across the US, he has seen the birth of such technologies as RAID, NAS and SAN, Virtualization, Cloud and Enterprise Flash. Prior to founding Storage Switzerland he was CTO at one of the nation's largest storage integrators where he was in charge of technology testing, integration and product selection.
