For MSPs Cloud Backup is all about Adding Value

For Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and Value Added Resellers (VARs) offering data protection as a service is an alluring option. Most end-user organizations would love to get rid of the backup headache. Unless regularly monitored, data protection is prone to error, and those errors can leave an organization unexpectedly exposed to data loss. But MSPs and VARs looking to offer these services have to make sure that the cloud data protection solutions they select will meet both their business and technological needs. Most importantly MSPs need to find a solution that will allow the MSP/VAR to add value.

Are you an Agent or an Advisor?

Some cloud-based data protection solutions are overly complete. They provide the software, on-site backup appliance, and the cloud storage. The only role left for the MSP/VAR is as an agent. The turnkey nature is good for small resellers that don’t have the technical bench to support the solutions they sell, but it may not be the right solution for MSPs and VARs. In fact, it may not be a good solution for customers either. If a problem arises, the small reseller has little ability to resolve the issue other than basic troubleshooting, the customer is left on their own to resolve the issue with the manufacturer.

The MSP/VAR, with a technical bench, should look for a cloud data protection solution that allows them to take part more actively in a variety of levels. Number one, the MSP/VAR will want to consider a solution that enables them to be the cloud, storing data in their facilities and potentially replicate to another facility. Being in control over what data is being stored where addresses one of the most common concerns that end-users have, “where is my data?”. It also emphasizes the value of the local relationship that the MSP has with their customer.

From a hardware perspective, the solution should offer the MSP/VAR the ability to start fast, with a turnkey appliance but also increase value by supplying their own. The same holds true for the VAR/MSPs storage that serves as the initial target for backups. The MSP/VAR will benefit from having a turnkey target storage system initially, but they may also want the flexibility to build their own.

  1. Agreed. Given there are literally thousands of MSP’s offering cloud backup services the differentiator is level of service. I often compare most cloud backup services companies to the electric company. If you do something foolish like opening your windows with the air conditioning running the electric company is not going to call you and let you know that is probably not a good use of their service. Instead the cloud backup service provider that analyzes how you use the service and offers specific tips on how to get the most value, or tell you that your backups are failing, are the ones that stand out in the crowd.
