Filling the Provider Backup Gateway Gap

Artisan Infrastructure Briefing Note

Artisan Infrastructure is a leading cloud infrastructure, management, and business continuity solutions provider. Its solutions enable cloud and hosting providers to migrate, manage and deliver continuously available cloud applications for their customers and suppliers. Artisan provides a cloud infrastructure that CSPs, MSPs cloud-oriented, enterprise IT departments (collectively “service providers) can resell or be a DR site to their infrastructure. The company recently announced its Neverfail HybriStor™ Appliance to help service providers better solve customer problems.

The Cloud Backup Gateway Challenge

One of the big challenges facing service providers is how to integrate existing customer infrastructure into their service offering. These organizations typically have a backup software solution that they would like their potential customers to adapt but often, for a variety of reasons, the potential customer cannot. The service provider either has to walk away from the business or find a way to integrate with the customer’s current backup infrastructure. This scenario is an ideal use case for a scalable, high performing backup target that can connect to almost any backup and archive software solution. This is why every service provider should have one in their portfolio.

Meet HybriStor™

HybriStor™ is a deduplication backup target that is sold as software that the service provider installs at its customer’s site. The software runs as one or multiple virtual machines (VM), delivering a scale-out front end that can ingest backup data as fast as the customer can send it. These virtual appliances are then connected to local storage or to an object storage system backend, either of which the service provider can also provide. Integrated into the HybriStor™ software are deduplication technologies that eliminate redundant data from the backup set. Because it deduplicates “in-line”, many writes are eliminated before they get to the object storage system, which further helps ingest performance.

The second part of the hybrid dedupe is the post processing that achieves the remainder of the data reduction and allows for the large capacities that make the HybriStor™ global deduplication compelling – this is especially true for the case of a central replication hub being fed from tens, or even hundreds, of other HybriStor™ systems. HybriStor™’s InstaCache™ feature provide intelligent caching of optimized deduped data to effectively support instant recovery functionalities and direct running of VMs from HybriStor™ NAS shares.

Important for the MSP is that the HybriStor™ solution is flexible in its hardware configuration. The service provider installs the software onto its hardware of choice. The software-only nature allows the service provider to add value by bundling it with hardware and integrating it. The HybriStor™ also supports a variety of object storage backends, which is important for service providers that have already made a object storage solution that they are most comfortable using. HybriStor™ supports both LAN based and cloud based object storage backends, with LAN based systems providing enterprise level performance.

HybriStor™ solves a big problem for service providers — how to provide a backup service to an organization with an existing investment in data protection software. HybriStor™ can be a target for almost any backup and archive application because it presents itself as a NAS mount point.

StorageSwiss Take

HybriStor™ fills a critical gap in many service provider offerings, allowing them to onboard customers that want to leverage the cloud but do not want to replace their current data protection software. Artisan Infrastructure has tailor made the solution for the service provider market; it’s flexible, allows them to add value and supports a variety of hardware and software combinations.

Twelve years ago George Crump founded Storage Switzerland with one simple goal; to educate IT professionals about all aspects of data center storage. He is the primary contributor to Storage Switzerland and is a heavily sought after public speaker. With over 25 years of experience designing storage solutions for data centers across the US, he has seen the birth of such technologies as RAID, NAS and SAN, Virtualization, Cloud and Enterprise Flash. Prior to founding Storage Switzerland he was CTO at one of the nation's largest storage integrators where he was in charge of technology testing, integration and product selection.
